I've been on a big Peter Gabriel and 80's & 90's Pink Floyd kick lately, as well as some of Yes's more recent stuff. I'm wondering if anyone has any other recommendations for similar work. I'm mostly looking for music in the same vein as Peter Gabriel and later Pink Floyd, excluding Genesis, of course, because I have plenty of that (and I prefer Gabriel-era Genesis, anyhow).
Also, to anyone who hasn't checked it out yet, the Peter Gabriel "Growing Up LIVE" DVD is awesome. Seeing Tony Levin live, even on DVD, is always a treat.

Kevin Gilbert
Come check out theKevin was hugely influenced by Gabriel and early Genesis, and was considered to be the heir apparent to the Genesis dynasty after Phil Collins left. Unfortunately, he died just two weeks before he was to formally meet with Banks and Rutherford. He had a small catalogue, and following, but he was easily one of the most talented musician of his generation. Plenty of information on the info page for the community, and should you have any other questions, feel free to let me know!

Re: Kevin Gilbert
I have to second this! Somewhere I've got a brilliant live cover version of Genesis' Supper's Ready performed by Kevin Gilbert. I also dig his covers of Led Xeppelin's Kashmir (which I actually prefer to the original-- primarily because I like his voice better than Robert Plant's), and Emerson Lake & Palmer's Karn Evil 9.But it's his own material that really stands out. I think Goodness Gracious from his 1995 album Thud album is even more relevant today than when it was written.

Also be sure to check out those who perform with Peter, such as Youssou N'Dour, Sinéad O'Connor, Caroline Lavelle, Daniel Lanois, and others. They don't usually sound just like him but one can hear the two-way influence.

actually, i'd see him looking the other side of it
i send old-school proggers to the fish era.anybody who likes Rabin-era yes is to my mind more likely to like the Hogarth works. look at Season's End, Afraid of Sunlight, and Marbles.
www.marillion.com has plenty of sound-samples, and you can sign up to get a free "sampler" cd of the hogarth era (8 or 9 tracks for only 2 GBP shipping).
otherwise, i definitely recommend piling through Steve Hackett's solo material.

"By late 1984, Gowan had given up on Tickle when suddenly he got a call from the producer who was out driving in a new sports car. Tickle asked him to hold the line because he wanted Lawrence to speak to someone. Tickle put Jerry Marotta on the line and the two began talking like old pals about their favourite music. Tickle had deliberately waited to respond to Gowan because he was waiting for Peter Gabriel's rhythm section of Tony Levin & Marotta, to finish Gabriel's latest record so they could commit to Gowan's material. Within a week the quartet were in Ringo Starr's house in the French Riviera putting down bedtracks for what would become a career making album: 'Strange Animal'. The record was released in 1985 to much publicity and hype as much for the sheer production value and craftsmanship as for the "who's who" performing on it."
