Looking for suggestions

I've been on a big Peter Gabriel and 80's & 90's Pink Floyd kick lately, as well as some of Yes's more recent stuff. I'm wondering if anyone has any other recommendations for similar work. I'm mostly looking for music in the same vein as Peter Gabriel and later Pink Floyd, excluding Genesis, of course, because I have plenty of that (and I prefer Gabriel-era Genesis, anyhow).
Also, to anyone who hasn't checked it out yet, the Peter Gabriel "Growing Up LIVE" DVD is awesome. Seeing Tony Levin live, even on DVD, is always a treat.

Kevin Gilbert

Come check out the [info]kevin_gilbert community. Unfortunately it is a relatively new and quiet community to check out right now, but you do yourself a favor by getting to know Kevin for the brilliant musician he was. He fronted the band Toy Matinee, which is a classic self-titled album, and had a number of fantastic solo albums as well.

Kevin was hugely influenced by Gabriel and early Genesis, and was considered to be the heir apparent to the Genesis dynasty after Phil Collins left. Unfortunately, he died just two weeks before he was to formally meet with Banks and Rutherford. He had a small catalogue, and following, but he was easily one of the most talented musician of his generation. Plenty of information on the info page for the community, and should you have any other questions, feel free to let me know!

Re: Kevin Gilbert

I have to second this! Somewhere I've got a brilliant live cover version of Genesis' Supper's Ready performed by Kevin Gilbert. I also dig his covers of Led Xeppelin's Kashmir (which I actually prefer to the original-- primarily because I like his voice better than Robert Plant's), and Emerson Lake & Palmer's Karn Evil 9.

But it's his own material that really stands out. I think Goodness Gracious from his 1995 album Thud album is even more relevant today than when it was written.

LISTEN TO THE FINAL CUT. It is Pink Floyd's peak album!

Well, if I'm asking for stuff LIKE Pink Floyd, recommending Pink Floyd is a little moot. I, of course, already have it. I'm looking for stuff that has more of that Peter Gabriel ambient, ethereal charm and layered orchestration, like Pink Floyd's last two albums and much of Yes's later stuff.

You're right, I just skimmed and saw "Pink Floyd" and that was my knee jerk reaction. I love that album.

Try "The Watch". It's more like a Genesis clone, I was quite surprised how much they sound like Gabriel-era Genesis.

And check out Citizen Cane. I was really embarassed when I heard them for the first time because of their similarity with Genesis.

If you like Gabriel's worldbeat sound and lush arrangements, I would recommend Loreena McKennitt. She began as a Celtic/traditional artist, but the albums The Mask and Mirror and The Book of Secrets incorporate many styles from continental Europe and the Middle East.

Also be sure to check out those who perform with Peter, such as Youssou N'Dour, Sinéad O'Connor, Caroline Lavelle, Daniel Lanois, and others. They don't usually sound just like him but one can hear the two-way influence.

All great recommendations, and artists I had completely forgotten! These are all JUST what I was looking for! THX!

In the same vein as the previous poster, I would recommend Afro-Celt Sound System. PG even features on a song of theirs. :)

If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Marillion might be to your liking. Their earlier stuff with their original lead singer, Fish (aka Derek Dick) is reminiscent of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. In fact they were sometimes criticized for sounding a bit TOO MUCH like Peter Gabriel-era Genesis back when Fish was still in the band. When he left the band after the Clutching at Straws album, they changed their musical direction with new lead singer, Steve Hogarth.

Start with Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws then try Fugazi.

Marillion is definitely a good way to go. Also, you might want to check out Curved Air, Renaissance, Steve Hackett solo stuff, and Hennie Bekker. All really good, mellow-sounding bands with a prog edge.

actually, i'd see him looking the other side of it

i send old-school proggers to the fish era.

anybody who likes Rabin-era yes is to my mind more likely to like the Hogarth works. look at Season's End, Afraid of Sunlight, and Marbles.

www.marillion.com has plenty of sound-samples, and you can sign up to get a free "sampler" cd of the hogarth era (8 or 9 tracks for only 2 GBP shipping).

otherwise, i definitely recommend piling through Steve Hackett's solo material.

The band FM is a good bet, especially their first album, Black Noise. Also look up the work of Larry Gowan. Although most only know him in the US for his replacing Dennis De Young in Styx, he had a long solo career in Canada and Europe. Here is a quote from his bio:

"By late 1984, Gowan had given up on Tickle when suddenly he got a call from the producer who was out driving in a new sports car. Tickle asked him to hold the line because he wanted Lawrence to speak to someone. Tickle put Jerry Marotta on the line and the two began talking like old pals about their favourite music. Tickle had deliberately waited to respond to Gowan because he was waiting for Peter Gabriel's rhythm section of Tony Levin & Marotta, to finish Gabriel's latest record so they could commit to Gowan's material. Within a week the quartet were in Ringo Starr's house in the French Riviera putting down bedtracks for what would become a career making album: 'Strange Animal'. The record was released in 1985 to much publicity and hype as much for the sheer production value and craftsmanship as for the "who's who" performing on it."

I like the long coat Tony wears; especially how it swishes around him during 'Downside Up.'

Well, theres a lot of different suggestions here, but maybe if you posted a request in [info]progshare a prog rock sharing community, you could hear some of the bands that people have been talking about, and be able to be introduced to them by hearing a few songs, allowing you to see whether or not you like them. I'll say that a band that you should listen to that does some sweet prog is Triumvirat, they're a really neat band that has similar sounds to ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. One of the reasons that I created the new community was to make it so that prog fans could be introduced to music that they had never heard of and actually be able to sample the music before going out and buying albums. I hope to see you over there, if you make a similar request I'll give you a song or two from Triumvirat. (I don't think that the mods of this community want sharing going on here, thats why they support [info]progshare as a paralell community.)
